The Brief

Sharp were looking for an events and experience management partner to help deliver their latest incentive trip.

The trip would reward top sales teams who reached their targets whilst giving the employees an opportunity to network and socialise with each other off site.

Stuart Sykes, Managing Director of Sharp explains how Sharp came to find Globe:

We had managed events in-house in the past, but had found that we ended up spending far too long on trying to arrange them, chasing suppliers and managing the process for our delegates. As such, we were looking for an expert to help bear that burden and came across Globe online while looking for suitable partners. We got in touch with different event management agencies, but Globe’s experience and professionalism, along with a knock-out proposal, stood them apart from the rest.

What we did

Globe arranged the trip and whisked 18 Sales Managers away on an incentive break to the beautiful coastal city of Porto, in Portugal.

Why Porto? Sykes continued:

I had suggested Porto as a possible venue for the incentive trip as I felt it would match the discerning tastes of our group…. Breath-taking scenery, port houses, good food and activities – all meant as a reward but also a team bonding exercise.

With just three days in this beautiful location, Globe were tasked with creating a full itinerary whilst allowing the sales team to relax and enjoy themselves.

To create a memorable experience Globe arranged unique sight-seeing tours, delicious Portuguese cuisine, and sufficient samples of the region’s Port and elements of planned surprises along the way. Read on for the full itinerary:

The group were met at Stansted Airport by their Globe host before checking in and jetting off on the 9:25 flight to Porto. After a short journey and a private coach transfer to the 4 star Pestana Porto, the group enjoyed a welcome glass of Port and an opportunity to enjoy lunch.

Once the group were refreshed, the Tuk Tuks awaited. Four modern style rickshaws introduced the group to the city by way of a tour, with a brief stop to enjoy a “natinha” (a typical pastry of the area). The guests returned to the hotel to change before a private tour and dinner at Taylor’s Port Wine Cellars – one of the oldest Port companies, located in the old town of Vila Nova de Gaia. Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman – founded in 1692 – is the last totally independent company of the original British Port houses still family owned and managed by descendants of the Yeatman and Fladgate families.

The group had an early start this morning, with breakfast delivered to each guest before boarding their private carriage at S. Bento Railway Station for a train ride to Regua, also known as the Port Wine Capital. Upon arrival guests were met at the station by their own private jeeps waiting to take them on a unique tour to Douro – a recognised UNESCO site. The jeeps travelled through S. Leonardo Galafura belvedere, along the national road 222 (classified by AVIS as one of the most beautiful in the world), inside Port Wine estates and its vineyards, through typical villages and various unique belvederes.

A traditional Douro buffet lunch welcomed everyone at a Winery followed by an opportunity to enjoy the estate, vineyards and tanks before heading back to Régua quay.

The group returned to the hotel to enjoy some time at leisure before an evening meal at DOP restaurant, a converted convent located in the historical city centre of Largo de S. Domingos. Just a short walk away from the hotel meant guests could stroll back at leisure, enjoying the night time atmosphere.

After a full two day itinerary the group enjoyed breakfast and a day at leisure before a late afternoon departure.

Summary

The event proved a big success for Sharp, as Sykes concluded:

When it comes down to it, even though we used a third party, we ended up saving time and administration internally. Thanks to this coupled with Globe’s positioning within the industry and the fantastic rates they were able to secure for our travel and accommodation, we actually ended up saving money as well as our own time and had the peace of mind that we had an expert events agency taking care of every detail.

The whole group had a fabulous time and I personally want to thank Globe for making it happen. I loved the way you ‘held back’ on the itinerary in order to create some ‘wow factor’ and that was certainly achieved – great locations for private dining and good conversation.
